Catalogue Note:
This is something of a milestone - it is the tenth CD by the band for P.E.K. Sound. The first, "For Real" (PKCD-125) was recorded back in 1998.
This latest recording was, like several previous CDs by the band, made at The Concorde Club near Southampton - not a live session. The personnel, almost unchanged from the last CD (PKCD-329) is Peter Wilkinson trumpet; John Maddocks clarinet & tenor sax; Tony Farr trombone; Chris Satterly piano; Dave Broomfield banjo & guitar; John Arthy double bass & sousaphone; Brian Barker drums. The addition of John Arthy's sousaphone on four tracks gives a new dimension to the sound of the band.
The tunes are:- Swing Me With Rhythm, Elephant Stomp, When Did You Leave Heaven, I Can't Escape From You, Coffee Grinder, Bechet's Fantasy, When I Leave The World Behind, C Jam Blues, Mabel's Dream, Sweet Emmalina, Sticks And Stones, Clouds In My Heart, New Orleans Stomp, Chant Of The Tuxedos, The Miller's Daughter Marianne.
Like many other band leaders John Maddocks is always on the look-out for new and interesting tunes and there are several here that I'd not heard before. John is fortunate to have Peter Wilkinson in the band; apart from his skills as a trumpet player he is a gifted arranger and all the arrangements on this CD are by Peter. (68min)
